What does being involved in Kids Belong 2017 look like?
We don’t need new social service agencies, we need to connect kids with good foster and adoptive families through the agencies and systems we already have. Many people would like to help, but do not know how. Kids Belong is about churches coming together to talk about how families can get involved. We, the church, need to simply talk about it! If we talk about it in a coordinated way, we will be more effective than talking about it individually.
Partnering in Kids Belong means participating in Belong Sunday on one of the last Sundays in April, 2017. This is an opportunity for many churches in our area to make a special emphasis out of foster care and adoption in our community by doing one or more of the following:
- Set aside 10 minutes of a service to talk about local foster care and adoption needs
- Use Kids Belong provided materials to feature a “Missions Moment” regarding local opportunities
- Invite a foster or adoptive family from your church community to share their story
- You could even preach a sermon on the biblical theme of adoption (It’s in the Bible. We checked.)
It’s not about doing a Sunday announcement in the way that Kids Belong would do it, it’s about having the conversation in your church community in a way that makes sense in your local context.
Use provided promotional materials as you are able and fits with your overall promotional style (ie posters, bulletin inserts, videos) throughout April to promote both Belong Sunday and the Kids Belong event.
Invite people to the Kids Belong event, to be held on Saturday May 6, 2017 at 6:00 pm.
This will be a fun family event with food and activities for kids. For the adults we will have a time to hear from our own local foster families and adoptive families. We will hear their stories and try to communicate what fostering and adoption are and how to get involved. Social service agencies will be there and will help people take their first steps toward getting involved should they choose to do so. We will also hear about ways to help supports kids and foster/adoptive families for those who choose not to get involved in that way.
